You might have guessed it already, or might have seen me predicting my doom on Twitter, but the fact is that I failed to make a visual novel in a month. By a long shot…
What went wrong though? I’d say it was mainly 2 things:
- Little free time: This year is going to be a busy one, but I had underestimated how busy I’d actually be. I used to average 15-20 hours of gamedev a week, but now I’m doing around 4-5.
- I’m slow at writing: I don’t have any experience writing visual novels, and although I’m getting better, I’m averaging at 250~ words per hour. That means a 4,000~ word script (my goal) would take me 16 hours… and that’s not counting any revisions or proofreading.
So what’s next? I still really like the scope and objectives behind this demo, so I think I’ll try to finish it even if it takes longer. But the question is how much longer? Ian is finishing up Dreams and Reality’s audio, so it won’t be long before I can get back to work and actually release it. I… guess I’ll see. Whatever happens, I’ll be telling you about it here!
